Numbers People Can Feel

A chart turns numbers into position, length, angle, area, or color, and people read some of those far more accurately than others: position and length beat area and color saturation. Good data storytelling picks the encoding for the decision at hand, labels in words, and shows uncertainty instead of hiding it. The weekly stylesheet table on this site is a small worked example: native meters, a caption that says what was measured, and one command to rebuild it.
