Octvember: costuming, ink, writing, casting

October 1 opened the production season, which runs to the New Year. Practice is the seed: what repeats may become a tradition. Octvember holds a costume sheet, the Inktober shelf, and a culture field for traditions I have met.

A release is a public checkpoint, not a claim that everything is finished. This page names what changed, where the proof lives, and which paths stay open.

I want my development sessions to become meditations: time to notice where my attention goes, stay with an idea, and understand why I chose one form over another. I’m also beginning a working theory of mind for this practice—asking how someone else might approach the same concept, what they might notice first, and where my explanation assumes too much. Their responses can change my understanding.

I want to strengthen my attention, reasoning, and ability to move through more specific spaces of ideas. Mathematics offers ways to name relationships, constraints, and transformations. I’d like to bring more of my own art into these explorations, grow my vocabulary, and practice sentence structures that give an idea the shape it needs. A development session can leave a drawing, a clearer sentence, or a better question alongside the code. Studies already on the shelves: the sunflower spiral, the bubble choir, and the algorithm lattice, which also opens Algorithms.

Four years on TikTok are the seed of what I know now:

A goal of my learning is to develop tacit knowledge that I can intentionally teach.

Every funded input should leave a visible consequence: a route strengthened, a session held, an asset published, or a method made reusable. The receipt is the before-and-after state, not a promise that activity happened somewhere offscreen.

Art

Twenty-seven more folios off the scanner, fifty-eight on the shelf; eight square scraps, twenty-five folio primes, and twenty-five faces of panel canvases waiting for their other halves. The opening view is the September scan of No. 09, Octvember, Novel Under Test. Later paint stays in the studio. Inktober still asks for thirty-one pieces with the table.

spw.quest opened as a guide to the language, thirteen sigils on one spiral. The projects bench holds the workbench, this site, and the folio stack, each with the marks it left in git. The workbench was read from inside the editor, and its asks are filed.

September 28 opened spw.quest as a guide to the language, its thirteen sigils wound along one spiral at the top, with installation one link away. More of the stack came off the scanner: eight square scraps and twenty-five folio primes, lifted off the scanner lid and stepped frame by frame from a folios hub that now holds the calendar and the day demo. Services gave small jobs their own count and started from grouped bundles, and backing the film or collaborating on lore.land can start as a card and an easy first message.

September 29 put three pieces on the projects bench — the Spw workbench, this site, and the folio stack — each with the marks it left in git. Highlighted words became honest with scripts off: a word with a home is a link, and the rest stop pretending to be buttons. Art is one tap from a phone, and every scan says where it lives.

October 1 began the production season. Octvember asks for a daily mark: thirty-one pieces in October with the table, one a day or in batches, scanned by the 31st.

October 5 gave the season its practices. A culture field keeps traditions I have met, sorted by what they do — regard, gather, give, cross, keep time, and remember — with where I met each one and what is not mine to claim. Costuming keeps a sheet for a costume as an affirmation: who you appeared as, what it affirms, what stayed, and what you are still learning. Home now reads any Spw you paste and offers the next move it earns, and a local .spw file opens as a room. Pictures from across the site tour home by day, newest first while they are new, and a folio comes forward with its question. The workbench page says what an edit costs and what each way of writing trades.

October 6 made the pages honest with scripts off and steady once they load. With scripts off, a lens shows every panel instead of hiding most of them, and a settings chip that needs a script sits dimmed with a note instead of looking live: 225 of them, on 26 pages. About fifteen seconds after Home loaded, the whole page used to drop twenty-two pixels as the header’s tools woke; it holds still now. Twenty places skipped a heading level, and the outline of eighteen routes now reads without a gap. The opening view holds October’s folio, No. 09, Octvember, Novel Under Test, as a whole laminated sheet. The cauldron holds each fragment as a small tape, with two reels that read its returns, and a mix names its result in a few plain words. The design hub reads itself while it is open: the modules mounted on the page, and the last changes to its root.

October 7 let the Spw mark in the header turn like a spool as a page’s tools wake. A tool that has not mounted draws its invitation again, but only where a reader can accept it, and scrolling asks less of a phone: the section handle and the row of utilities stopped rewriting what had not changed.

October 8 replaced Quick Start with a shelf: fifty-three boxes in eight aisles, where a look is something you pick up and its effect shows where you are looking. Lighting reaches the theme packs without a reload. On a phone, the route menu opens as a sheet at the foot of the screen every time. Search lands on a sentence now: type a copy key such as home.reason.why.issue and it opens that sentence on its page, and named sections answer by name. Home’s ledes and the design pages’ openings became addresses, one per sentence, so a citation or a translation can reach a single line.

October 10 read every plan behind the site against what had shipped. Forty of eighty-eight were done, merged, or asleep, and moved to the archive ledger; the forty-eight that stay each open with what landed, the next slice, and what it waits on. Three pages that promised more than they held were fixed on the way: Settings dropped a choice nothing read, the folio archive counts fifty-eight, and the curriculum says one module is built and five are outlined.

October 11 read the Spw workbench from inside the editor, where the language meets its tools. The parser reads this site correctly; the editor’s colors and links do not use it yet. The asks are in the workbench review, and Spw’s operators are moving into the workbench, where they can be studied more mindfully.

October 12 started rewriting spw.quest: its words, and how its page is laid out. The workbench page now opens with an invitation to it, and says its words and layout are still being playtested.

October 13 closed the A-cycle; the receipts are above. The next close is October 26.

October 14 gave the reading a Display menu and a pinch that resizes the text, on spw.quest and as a gesture a page here can carry. A note stays on the device, and the guide opens on reading, writing, and study. On this site, Spw in the parser highlights under the caret, and the same highlight sits on the Spw pages.

October 25 read every route as a Spw tree, set beside the routes in its folder. The nineteen operator pages share one order of sections, and five of them skip two questions the other fourteen ask; bane.land and boon.land part only at their names. The plans behind how these pages look and move now gather their open questions into one sitting, and the copy lost a few sentences that corrected a belief nobody held.

September 14 made spwashi.com quieter and quicker to answer. A settled page now rests instead of redrawing itself every frame, the site's beat restyles only the elements that use it, and changing a setting resyncs the page once instead of four times. Rhythm authority is new: you choose whether your tuner, the live page, or the stylesheet sets the ambient tempo.

Measured that day in headless Chrome at a laptop width: a settings change went from 1.7–4.2 seconds of main-thread work to 1.3–1.8 seconds, and from 3,700–19,000 page changes to about 1,000. A topic page thirty seconds after load went from 2,896 changes in four seconds to 24.

September 15 named the rooms those pages already had. Catalog, loading, teardown, and the typed registry no longer share a drawer. A remount waits for the last module to leave; a module with no mount fails in the open instead of pretending. Shell menu teardown owns its own close. Home, Settings, and Software reached runtime-ready in Chrome with zero console errors; the local suite passed 375 tests.

September 16 made that receipt readable on a fold-width screen: the three close cards sit side by side instead of stacking one letter per line. On About, sitting a lens now changes the first fold instead of hiding under the picture. The sprint page keeps its own lede; daily promo toasts stay off it.

September 17 named the laminated folio stack as a meditative practice, not only as a future edition. Collage and lamination are current. Paint returns a year later to the same surface; a season of color can run across several folios. Tempera already kept the stack from welding; matte varnish is going on the acrylic so those layers can restack too. The receipt is on Art: authenticity from return, new pictures from the stack, and posts that record the work. Orders opened the next day. The memory garden got its picture the same evening: an open atlas with teal tree-shapes growing from the pages, promoted from a Midjourney session of thirty-two renders and placed once, on Home beside the tap / hold / mix key. The other thirty-one stay reference.

The same day, the TikTok group streak reached 314 days and the streak pet popped into outfits. Share one incremental, otherwise inconsequential wonder — a leaf, a joke, a hat, a soup — so autumn stays nutritious. The math is on Mental health; Wednesday is RPG Wednesday; the kitchen issue is recipes.

September 18 opened folio orders by card. Fill the order card on Art, then send a screenshot, the copied seed, or the downloaded .spw.txt; the reply names the piece and its price. Every seed card now saves its script as .spw.txt, so a phone that cannot paste a block into a chat can still attach a file. The archive’s canon is original and continuous. The same day, Materials read eight material families and six processes from the folio bench; search began indexing every frame, so a typed sigil such as #>collect_a_folio lands on the frame that wears it; and the daily wonder gained a close control and a call shaped by where its link goes.

September 19 was an operator day. Six hundred and seventy-four frame sigils opened with a mark and carried no operator; the markup now authors the operator every sigil already reads as, and a check refuses a new sigil without one. The footer cauldron, the bed at the foot of this page where held words land, mixes through the page’s lens: choose a mode and a connect, compare, or apply intent, and the prompt and the mix change with it. On Settings, Tune the Site came back to one column of folds instead of five narrow strips, and the page is about a third of its former height. The rest of the retune request — pulses, ornament, footer, nav, satchel — is cached as sixteen owned lines with their gates. The local suite passed 399 tests.

September 22 update: the design work now has an ornament map with live ribbon, rail, rule, and corner specimens. The hub’s reference and lab links put the smaller pages within reach, and new diagrams show ornament layers, density, and component slots. I’m following those connections toward more visual variety across routes.

Later the same day, ornaments started hearing the page. Five of their inputs had been written in terms of themselves, which CSS treats as a loop and quietly ignores, so a mark never brightened when attention reached it. Each route’s ornaments now wear that route’s own color. Two marks joined the map: a landing that draws an outline which lifts and settles when a link brings you to a section, and a brace that draws Spw’s own { } around frames that are already scopes. Braces open around language rooms like the parser’s specimen suite; corners hold design references like the spectral workshop.

The nineteen operator pages got easier to move between and to try. The ring at the foot of each page is now a row of named chips in each operator’s color, so ? probe reads as a word and not only punctuation, and each chip lands on the opening of the page it names. Every example has a link that opens it in the parser, already loaded; all nineteen rebuild exactly. The pages now lead with what each mark does, and the ring’s ! matches the action page it leads to. @, perspective, waits for a page until its meaning is settled.

The site also got lighter that day. The published stylesheets now ship without their commentary, which stays in the source for anyone reading it: the core stylesheet a visitor downloads went from 320 to 191 KiB compressed, 40% less, with no rule changed. How the engineering is paced tells that story with a week-by-week table you can rebuild from the repository, beside how Spw got here, from a 2017 course on learning from text to a parser with editor plugins. Systems Work now offers protocol and integration pipelines.

The topics started reading like a course. Software and math gained sixteen pages, from what a program is to forecasting, arranged as building blocks in order, and every topic page now points to a next one. Andragogy names my focus on adult education, with a field guide, Develop Your Sound, for engineers, researchers, and data storytellers. Fields collects principles from the curricula my peers, mentors, and family trained in, each linked to the page that uses it, beside parallel and competing theories from China, India, Africa, Europe, Australia, and Central and South America. Biochemistry has a first page.

September 23 tidied what Home was saying without meaning to. A dotted underline had crept under every line of prose, so links looked like everything else; a tooltip followed the pointer across whole paragraphs; the header links turned into small blue chips once the page settled. Each came from one rule reaching further than it meant to, and each now stops where it should. The picture beside the logo on Home no longer floats a quarter screen below it.

The same day, feedback learned where it is. The feedback card now knows which part of the site you came from, a guide, a component, a recipe, a folio, and offers the notes I hear most often there as one tap; for the ones I have already answered, my answer comes back right away. Just saying thanks is one tap too. Lore.Land chapters now end with a slip for the scribes: a line that stayed with you, a theory, a question about the world. spw.quest now says what the workbench adds, where to run it, and what a finished setup looks like.

That evening the feedback form became the card itself. You write on it and watch it fill: the header follows your choices, your name is the signature, and the card turns from dashed to solid once it says something. Here, it asks what happened on the site. The topics began handing you something to do: a tiny show where logic, programs, data structures, counting, and testing each add one piece to the same cue sheet, which you can download and hand to another performer. Paragraphs, lists, and definitions on Home, About, Services, and Membership got a little more air.

September 24 started a periodical. wap.mom prints Wondering About Pi, numbered by π’s own digits so it cannot run out, with The e Supplement bound in. Eleven issues are in galley proof and three slots are open; each issue ends on uses for the hand, the table, the work, and the mind, and eleven figures can be moved by the reader. It is written in a room that can be read on stream.

September 25 changed nothing you can see, on purpose. I read the stylesheets from the bottom up, the way a resin painting is poured in layers that set before the next, and found that the order the site declares its layers in is not the order a visitor receives: a page’s own rules quietly outrank the shared controls they were meant to feed. The controls still look right because pages pass their colors through instead of painting over them. The plan makes that order one thing, reviewed in a browser before it ships, then lets each layer say how far its rules reach and how long they last, so a change gets the care it deserves.

September 26 put the stack on the shelf. Thirty-one folios sit in the order they came off the scanner; six threads gather them, each opens to a flip through its neighbors, a sideways piece can be turned upright, and five open in high-res this week. A folio now lifts out of its slot when it opens, slides toward its neighbor when it flips, and settles back where it came from when it closes. The thread pills answer a mouse click, and on a laptop the view keeps flip and Close beside the piece instead of below its fold.

September 27 gave the words their receipts. A held lens now carries its operator across pages as the visit’s intent, and the promo meets you along that intent after the read, not before. Every picture says whether it is original or generated, and a folio scan lies in its frame under laminate. Highlighted words stopped promising in HTML what only the runtime does; the ones with a home — the cauldron, the two vessels, and hypermedia’s surface, capability, and receipt — are links now, and their note opens with what the word means. A clock reads every dated sentence on the site and says when its tense has run out, so a page can no longer say “today” about a day that passed. texture.website lets a grain be tried under your own words, taken as one rule and one tile, or commissioned. The production season for the feature is October 1 through New Year, at attention.productions. Backing the daily promo is the card.

That evening the rest of the stack came off the scanner. Twenty-seven more folios each open with a question they seem to ask and a place to keep your answer, or your view of which way up one should hang; five of them open in high-res this week.
