Deciding Before You Know

A forecast is a decision aid, not a prophecy. Time-series methods find level, trend, and seasonality in past observations and project them forward as a range, not a single number. A good forecast is judged against a simple baseline, checked on data it has not seen, and delivered with its uncertainty, so the person deciding knows how much room to leave.
